Martha: Were you in the hospital yesterday?
Helen: No, I wasn't. I wasn't in the hospital yesterday.

Paul: Just fine, thanks. And how are you?
Fred: I’m fine, thanks. What day is today, Paul?
Paul: Today is Thursday.
Fred: You weren’t here last week, were you?
Paul: No, I wasn’t. I was in the hospital last week.
Fred: Are you well now?
Paul: Oh yes. I’m well now. I wasn’t well last week.
Fred: Were you in the hospital for several days?
Paul: Yes, I was. I was there for six days.
Fred: Were you in the hospital last March, too?
Paul: Yes, I was. I was in the hospital in March and in July.
Fred: I’m glad you’re well now, Paul.
Paul: Thank you. I’m very well now.

Paul: No, I wasn’t. I wasn’t in class on Thursday or Friday.
Harry: Were you in class in January?
Paul: No, I wasn’t. I was in class in December, but not in January.
Harry: You weren’t in class in September, were you?
Paul: No, I wasn’t. I was in class in October, but not in September.
Harry: Where were you last Saturday?
Paul: In New York. Last Saturday I was in New York.

Dr. Rice: Today is Monday. This is January.
Mr. Brown: Is this your briefcase, Dr. Rice?
Dr. Rice: No, it isn’t. Maybe it’s Dr. Baker’s briefcase.
Mr. Brown: Were is the Dr. Baker? Do you know?
Dr. Rice: Dr. Baker is in the hospital. He’s not very well.
Mr. Brown: Was Dr. Baker in the hospital last week, too?
Dr. Rice: No, he wasn’t. He was very well last week.
Mr. Brown: You were in Washington, D. C. for several days, weren’t you?
Dr. Rice: Yes. I was. I was in Washington in December.
Mr. Brown: Where were you in November?
Dr. Rice: I was here in November. That was two months ago.
Mr. Brown: Wasn’t your friend Harry Long here last week?
Dr. Rice: Yes, he was. He was here for three days last week.
